This letter was very interesting as it brings news from back in Kentucky and revisits the situation about Mr. Ballinger. Luther reveals that Mr. Ballinger must have been involved with the K.K.K. as they made their presence known by placing a large emblem on his casket.

Letter 29 – A Partial Letter from Emma
This is the only remaining page from a letter from Austin’s sister. She writes about Maxine’s wedding so this must have been some time in the last half of 1938, nearer to Christmas.
Letter 28 – A Poem on a Cake
This was a partial letter with no date or signature. Currently, it is out of context and just stands alone as a cute poem on a cake. I will try to find more parts of it and put more context to it. Right now, based upon where it was found with the other letters, this…Read more
Letter 27 – From Bethel, KY – May 22, 1938
Austin and Lula’s niece, Maxine Pieratt, writes to them, a few short weeks before her wedding. It is interesting to read “everyday” things that were occurring while big news items, like WWII, were happening or were on the brink of beginning.
Heirloom 57 – Vintage Round-Rimmed Glasses
The optometrist office where this case came from is located at 282 N. 2nd Street in Upland, California. These are bifocals but I do not know if they were Laura’s or Lula’s. Heirloom Disclaimer – I have done my best to identify either the owner or purpose of an artifact based upon either direct knowledge,…Read more
Heirloom 51 – The Family Jewels – Esprit Swiss Brooch Pocket Watch
A beautiful, 14k gold ladies pocket watch that was worn as a brooch. I believe that the brooch portion was probably sold independent of the watch, although they may have been purchased at the same time. The Leon Hirsch Watch Company made the case and the gear work for this watch which was made before…Read more
Heirloom 50 – The Family Jewels – Allerton Watch Co. Clockworks with KING DE LUXE Face Wrist Watch
This vintage rolled gold plated watch was among Laura’s items. While dirty, it is still quite a beautiful piece. Heirloom Disclaimer – I have done my best to identify either the owner or purpose of an artifact based upon either direct knowledge, notes, or context. If unable to identify, I will provide as much information…Read more
Heirloom 49 – The Family Jewels – Sapphire and Pearl Brooch with Tassel
This is a small, lapel brooch of Laura’s. Heirloom Disclaimer – I have done my best to identify either the owner or purpose of an artifact based upon either direct knowledge, notes, or context. If unable to identify, I will provide as much information about the item as I am able.
Heirloom 48 – The Family Jewels – Blue Diamond Intertwined Brooch
This is a pretty piece, even though it’s missing a few of the smaller diamonds. Laura must have worn it many times. Heirloom Disclaimer – I have done my best to identify either the owner or purpose of an artifact based upon either direct knowledge, notes, or context. If unable to identify, I will provide…Read more
Heirloom 47 – The Family Jewels – The Golden Earring
I said in an earlier post that I felt that most of the jewelry was costume jewelry but this one single earring does appear that it might be the real deal. It doesn’t have a match which means that Laura held onto this one for a reason – maybe in hopes that she found the…Read more
